١
AAabasa watawalla.
The Prophet frowned and turned away
٢
An jaahu al-aAAma.
Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].
٣
Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka.
But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified
٤
Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu aththikra.
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?
٥
Amma mani istaghna.
As for he who thinks himself without need,
٦
Faanta lahu tasadda.
To him you give attention.
٧
Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka.
And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.
٨
Waamma man jaaka yasAAa.
But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]
٩
Wahuwa yakhsha.
While he fears [ Allah ],
Faanta AAanhu talahha.
From him you are distracted.
Kalla innaha tathkira.
No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;
Faman shaa thakarah.
So whoever wills may remember it.
Fee suhufin mukarrama.
[It is recorded] in honored sheets,
١٤
MarfooAAatin mutahhara.
Exalted and purified,
١٥
Bi-aydee safara.
[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,
١٦
Kiramin barara.
Noble and dutiful.
Qutila al-insanu ma akfarah.
Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.
Min ayyi shay-in khalaqah.
From what substance did He create him?
Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarah.
From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;
Thumma assabeela yassarah.
Then He eased the way for him;
Thumma amatahu faaqbarah.
Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.
Thumma itha shaa ansharah.
Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.
Kalla lamma yaqdi maamarah.
No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.
Falyanthuri al-insanuila taAAamih.
Then let mankind look at his food -
Anna sababna almaasabba.
How We poured down water in torrents,
Thumma shaqaqna al-arda shaqqa.
Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],
Faanbatna feeha habba.
And caused to grow within it grain
WaAAinaban waqadba.
And grapes and herbage
Wazaytoonan wanakhla.
And olive and palm trees
Wahada-iqa ghulba.
And gardens of dense shrubbery
٣١
Wafakihatan waabba.
And fruit and grass -
MataAAan lakum wali-anAAamikum.
[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.
Fa-itha jaati assakhkha.
But when there comes the Deafening Blast
Yawma yafirru almaro min akheeh.
On the Day a man will flee from his brother
Waommihi waabeeh.
And his mother and his father
Wasahibatihi wabaneeh.
And his wife and his children,
Likulli imri-in minhum yawma-ithinsha'nun yughneeh.
For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.
Wujoohun yawma-ithin musfira.
[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -
Dahikatun mustabshira.
Laughing, rejoicing at good news.
Wawujoohun yawma-ithin AAalayhaghabara.
And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.
٤١
Tarhaquha qatara.
Blackness will cover them.
Ola-ika humu alkafaratu alfajara.
Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
