١
La oqsimu bihatha albalad.
I swear by this city, Makkah -
٢
Waanta hillun bihatha albalad.
And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -
٣
Wawalidin wama walad.
And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],
٤
Laqad khalaqna al-insana feekabad.
We have certainly created man into hardship.
٥
Ayahsabu an lan yaqdira AAalayhi ahad.
Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?
٦
Yaqoolu ahlaktu malan lubada.
He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
٧
Ayahsabu an lam yarahu ahad.
Does he think that no one has seen him?
٨
Alam najAAal lahu AAaynayn.
Have We not made for him two eyes?
٩
Walisanan washafatayn.
And a tongue and two lips?
١٠
Wahadaynahu annajdayn.
And have shown him the two ways?
Fala iqtahama alAAaqaba.
But he has not broken through the difficult pass.
Wama adraka maalAAaqaba.
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?
١٣
Fakku raqaba.
It is the freeing of a slave
Aw itAAamun fee yawmin theemasghaba.
Or feeding on a day of severe hunger
Yateeman tha maqraba.
An orphan of near relationship
Aw miskeenan tha matraba.
Or a needy person in misery
Thumma kana mina allatheena amanoowatawasaw bissabri watawasaw bilmarhama.
And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
Ola-ika as-habualmaymana.
Those are the companions of the right.
Wallatheena kafaroo bi-ayatinahum as-habu almash-ama.
But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.
AAalayhim narun mu'sada.
Over them will be fire closed in.
